Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso, author of the first book of short-stories published in the Portuguese literature in 1575, has been remembered for approaching in his stories supernatural elements of magic, witchcraft and miracle, what led the Inquisition to suppress at least three tales in the second edition (1585) of his collection. This paper, considering the analysis of the five stories in which the supernatural is evident, aims to show that, differently from the humanist magi- cians, who legitimatized the natural magic arts, Trancoso still reflects the medieval orthodox mentality, by sustaining the miracle as the only manifestation of wonder and by condemning the magical practices as heresies.
