Novelties in Gothic art in the Middle Ages introduced by Suger of Saint-Denis, raised varied aesthetic questions. One of them is the concern for representation of light within the walls of the cathedral premises. The Abbot of Saint-Denis, in his constructions, gives priority to transparency in the walls, in the search for a certain type of inner light that bathes the enclosure screening by colorful stained glass windows. This shows a clear intention of representing the metaphysics of light on the path to transcendence, as Suger`s explicit goal was to make of temple a ladder towards Heaven. In this regard the philosophical inspiration the Pseudo-Dionysius is a hermeneutical key point to understand the intentions of Suger in his efforts to capture, through the stone, a visible light that properly represents the invisible light, making it both close and transcendent.
