The importance of Peter Abelard’s Dialogus inter philosophum, iudaeum et christianum cannot be overstated when discussing the medieval literary genre of the controversial dialogue. On a historico-critical analysis, it has often been interpreted as a genuine attempt at an interreligious understanding. However, from a new hermeneutical approach that doesn’t beg the answer, its sense radically departs from the traditional interpretation. I will attempt to put the text into question, by considering the problems it explicitly addresses. Thus, I will propose an interpretation according to which the Dialogus can also be read as a work with certain apologetic features, operating as a cautionary tale directed to the most intransigent Christians of his time.
